Girls on the Run hits its stride

HUNTLEY – Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois anticipates its largest fundraiser turnout yet at a golf outing Monday, a sign of the group’s growing presence in the region, organizers said.

The group began in 2007 by providing fitness and life lessons to 17 adolescent girls in McHenry County. Membership has ballooned to the point that 850 girls participated in the program this year. The group also extended its services to DeKalb County and had nearly 4,000 girls, family members and friends participate in its annual 5K race last month.

With increased demand, organizers have found ways to increase resources. The group started an annual golf fundraiser in 2010 with 40 participants, and it expects 120 people to hit the links and raise money Monday at Whisper Creek Golf Club, 12840 Del Webb Blvd.
