CHICAGO — The Secretary of the Navy and the governor of Illinois have attended the naming ceremony for the first modern Navy vessel to be named for the state.

Gov. Pat Quinn and Secretary Ray Mabus were at the USS Illinois ceremony Friday on Chicago's Navy Pier. The USS Illinois is a nuclear-powered, next-generation attack submarine designed for deep ocean warfare and shallow water operations.

It will join the Navy's fleet in 2015.
