Man who fled to Uganda pleads guilty in sex case
WOODSTOCK – A former Lake in the Hills man who prosecutors said fled to Uganda after being charged with attempted criminal sexual abuse pleaded guilty Wednesday.
John E. Birtell, 50, was sentenced to two years of probation for the Class A misdemeanor. He must complete a sex-offender evaluation and follow all recommendations, register as a sex offender for 10 years and have no contact with the victim.
He also was sentenced to 180 days in jail and given credit for time served.
