Residents pouring on water in Huntley

HUNTLEY – Excessively dry, hot weather for the past month has caused many residents to turn on sprinklers, hoses and irrigation systems to try to keep their lawns from turning yellow and that's taking a toll on Huntley's water system.

The village's typically pumps a million-and-a-half gallons a day to residents for drinking, landscaping, car-washing and bathing. But Public Works Director Jim Schwartz said his staff has seen that rise to 4 million gallons a day in June.

"It's extremely dry," Schwartz said. "We are holding our own, but when you are pumping that much water, you can have a problem real quick."
