Kane County coroner dies while awaiting trial

CHICAGO – Kane County Coroner Charles West has died from complications after liver transplant surgery.

West's family says the 69-year-old from Elgin died early Wednesday at University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center. West had been awaiting trial on felony misconduct charges.

He pleaded not guilty in 2010 to charges he allowed a TV to be taken from a house where a death was being investigated. Prosecutors alleged West didn't properly dispose of a 24-inch television taken from the home of a Carpentersville man who died in 2007. Authorities allege West gave the TV to two of his deputy coroners who shared a residence.
