County to review lawbreaker fees

WOODSTOCK – Frustration over a new state-mandated $2 court fee is prompting the McHenry County Board to review what it charges lawbreakers in the way of costs.

Calling the growing list of fees nothing short of “gouging” taxpayers, board members at first voted against creating a fund Tuesday in which to put the revenue, which under state law will help state’s attorneys offices automate their record-keeping.

But they reconsidered their vote after cooling down and realizing they would not be stopping the fee, which has been collected since June 1, only hampering its use.
