Man found dead near Veteran Acres identified

CRYSTAL LAKE – A McHenry man died of a self-inflicted gunshot Thursday morning near Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake.

Police were called to the 300 block of Lorraine Drive at Veteran Acres Park and Sterne’s Woods for a report of a man unconscious and bleeding near a bike path in that area. Early findings indicated a self-inflicted injury, said Cmdr. Derek Hyrkas of the Crystal Lake Police Department.

The man was identified as Michael Nolan, a 21-year-old McHenry resident, said McHenry County Deputy Coroner Curt Bradshaw.

It was the second suicide in the park in the past seven months. TJ Schomer, a 20-year-old McHenry East High School graduate, was found dead in Veteran Acres just before Christmas in 2011.

The McHenry County Crisis Program hotline offers help to anyone feeling depressed or having thoughts of suicide. It can be reached at 800-892-8900.
