Crash into pole cuts power in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD – A 67-year-old woman fell asleep at the wheel and struck an electrical pole Sunday in Lakewood, knocking out power to a few dozen homes.

The driver, Katherine E. Lewis of Lakewood, struck the pole, a mailbox and a car parked in a driveway on Lake Avenue near Oxford Lane shortly after 6 p.m., Lakewood Police Chief Lawrence Howell said.

Lewis was taken to a local hospital, treated and released, hospital officials said.

Lewis was not cited in the accident, police said. The power outage affected about 44 homes, ComEd officials said.
