Sting nets 7 in Illinois in grant bribery scheme
CHICAGO – An undercover FBI sting has led to the arrest of seven Chicago-area individuals on federal bribery charges involving fictitious U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grants.
The defendants include the campaign treasurer of a former Illinois state senator. The senator was not named in the federal indictment unsealed Tuesday. Two Cook County sheriff's department corrections officers also were charged.
According to the indictment, the defendants believed they were able to obtain several $25,000 grants in exchange for kickbacks of $5,000.
