NRC holding public meeting to discuss Byron plant

CHICAGO — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans to discuss safety at the Byron Nuclear Power Station.

A public meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the plant's training building, where NRC staff will present the agency's 2011 plant assessment and answer questions.

The NRC says the facility about 95 miles northwest of Chicago operated safely overall last year. There was one finding of low-to-moderate safety significance — a failure to ensure nuts were properly tightened when new equipment was installed on an emergency diesel generator. The generator was inoperable for 11 months.
