After tour of duty, Marine returns home to Harvard

HARVARD – In one night, Lance Cpl. John MacKenzie got everything he missed most during his seven-month tour of Afghanistan – to pet the family dog, feel fresh grass under his feet, and eat a home-cooked meal.

“I missed the little stuff,” the 19-year-old Marine said. “When I walked on grass for the first time, it was amazing.”

And in a heartwarming moment, his mother, Caren MacKenzie, also got what she wanted when she and her son untied a yellow ribbon around a large tree in the front yard.
