Fun, tiring first day of RAGBRAI

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa
Frank, an Iowa farmer, helps fix Meredith's flat tire on the first day of RAGBRAI. (Meredith Schaefer)

First, let me at the record straight, Iowa is not flat!

After my first day on the road, I made the whole 54 miles. That doesn't sound like a lot. At least it didn't to me. I thought it would be an easy day ... I've done 50 before! But it was hot and hilly and hard.

I loved it!

In my first day I got a flat, fixed my chain, learned how to pace myself (I hope), went down a slip n slide and ate and ate and ate.

The best advice I've gotten so far is: "Remember, you are on vacation. If all you've done at the end is 471 miles, that's a lot. But RAGBRAI offers so much more!"

Meredith will be riding in her first RAGBRAI this summer. The trip is an annual bicycle ride across Iowa. In fact, this will be her first time on a bike in years. She has been at the Northwest Herald since 2010.
