Cheesecake creations in Algonquin bakery

ALGONQUIN – When it comes to baking one-of-a-kind sweet treats, Kelly Buchanan takes the (cheese)cake.

She and her company, Kelly’s Sweet Morsels Inc., have parlayed an old family recipe into a growing cottage industry: Gourmet cheesecakes for the hotel and country club industries. Buchanan sells about 25 different flavors, plus such seasonal offerings as pumpkin, eggnog, peppermint stick and cran/apple. Now approaching her third anniversary, the Huntley resident is partnering with a local bakery, Sugar Hills, to bake the cakes.

“She established the company and grew it to the point that she could by herself,” said Anna Majewski, a Polish immigrant who has operated the Algonquin bakery for nearly seven years. “She had to partner with someone. ... We’re already doing a similar type of thing and her product is really good, so I know I can work with her. I’m not going to put my name on something that is of lower quality.”
