Public visitation planned for Larimer
CRYSTAL LAKE – Funeral arrangements have been set for Crystal Lake native John Larimer, who was killed Friday during a mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater.
Larimer’s funeral and burial will be private. A public visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Davenport Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176) in Crystal Lake.
Larimer, 27, was one of 12 people killed in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater when, according to police, 24-year-old James Holmes started shooting during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Besides the dead, 58 people were injured.
The Navy cryptologic technician was shot as he protected his girlfriend, Juleah Vojtsek of Algonquin.
Larimer was a petty officer third class and part of a unit that belongs to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet, stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado.
Larimer, the youngest of five children, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2008 with a dual degree in political science and history. He was involved in the History Honors Society in college, according to his obituary.
He is a 2003 graduate of Crystal Lake South High School, where he was active in theater, the speech team, academic team and band. He played trombone.
In middle school, Larimer was a member of the Future Problem Solvers. He was active in Boy Scouts and had jobs at a movie theater and a Chili’s restaurant.
The Larimer family has set up a memorial fund and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the John T. Larimer Memorial Fund at Citibank, 225 W. Virginia Ave., Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
