Get a grip

To the Editor:

In a July 18 letter by Lynda DeLaforgue, “Fairer system needed,” she talks of the need for a graduated income tax. She states this vital reform would raise as much as $2.4 billion annually by asking “high income earners” to pay slightly more, and most importantly that 94 percent of Illinoisans would pay less.

Let’s see how that would work. One hundred taxpayers pay $100 each. Now 94 get a $1 reduction (1 percent) and the six left over get to pay $15.66 more each to make up $94.00. Is that what you call slightly more?
