The dog days of summer have everyone dreaming of the ultimate vacation spot. If you’re a celebrity, however, you’re probably hitting the road for a pricey rental, or perhaps a vacation home in one of the United States’ most exclusive spots: Malibu, South Beach or the Hamptons.

Malibu

Just under 40 miles south of Los Angeles, Malibu tops the list for celebrity getaways.

That proximity, says Mauricio Umansky, CEO of luxury brokerage The Agency, is responsible for its superstar allure.

The ocean views and relaxed lifestyle are pretty appealing, too, adds Malibu agent Jonathan Ruiz.

“Malibu has everything a celebrity could want,” explained Ruiz. “It’s got the privacy, the great dining, everything for an active lifestyle. But if you also want that very Zen, very chill, relaxing downtime, [Malibu] has it, too.”

Some A-listers prefer the area year round — Steven Spielberg and Pierce Brosnan both own Malibu properties — but others, like David and Victoria Beckham, prefer to rent for a just few months a year.

“It’s an appealing celebrity retreat,” said Ruiz. “You never know who you’ll spot on the beach.”

The Beckhams rented this gorgeous Malibu home last summer.

And if they can swing it, some celebrities choose to buy in Malibu and rent out their properties when they’re not using them. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most recent celebs to take this route, renting out his oceanfront Malibu property for $75,000 per month.

The Hamptons

In the summer, Manhattan nearly empties out as the wealthy and well-recognized battle traffic to get to this stretch of beach towns on the south fork of New York’s Long Island. Home to some of the most expensive properties in the country, the Hamptons is one of the oldest summer colonies in the United States.

The Clintons, Madonna, President Obama and Mariah Carey are just a few of the famous folks who prefer to vacation here.

Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon are currently calling this Hamptons manse home.

More than the white sand and luxe digs, what attracts celebrities is the social scene. From dinners at Jerry Seinfeld’s home to the annual Fourth of July White Party, part of the appeal is being seen out and about.

“It’s the people watching, it’s the socialites,” Umansky said. “The Hamptons is just where everyone goes.”

South Beach

For an entirely different vacation scene, South Beach in Miami is a popular celebrity destination. Best known for its nightlife and luxury shopping — Kim Kardashian co-owns a shop there — the area appeals to a younger set of celebs.

Enrique Iglesias calls Miami home, so does his longtime girlfriend Anna Kournikova. Singers Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Drake and Beyonce also own places there.

International

Of course, the stars who have the funds and time will head overseas to any number of high-end spots. The South of France and Italy are popular with George Clooney and the Jolie-Pitt clan, while others head to the Bahamas for white sand and privacy. And the hippest new places to vacation for the celebrity set? The Middle East and Turkey, says Umansky.
