Cubs' Garza sidelined until after trade deadline

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

CHICAGO – The odds of the Cubs trading pitcher Matt Garza before the deadline have taken a big hit.

Manager Dale Sveum said Garza, who is recovering from cramping in his right triceps, will not make his next start until late next week, after the July 31 trade deadline. Garza is not expected to go on the disabled list.

The Cubs' other sought after starting pitcher Ryan Dempster is also not scheduled to start until after Tuesday's deadline, taking the mound that night versus Pittsburgh.

As part of Ron Santo Day at Wrigley Field, a No. 10 is printed on the outfield grass and all No. 10 flags fly above the stadium to honor Santo's recent induction into the Hall of Fame.

Travis Wood (4-5, 4.33 ERA) starts for the Cubs and is trying to bounce back from two rough starts, both losses, after allowing 15 total runs in 10 2/3 innings. The Cardinals send right-hander Lance Lynn (12-4, 3.10) to the mound.
