Fire significantly damages garage in Crystal Lake
CRYSTAL LAKE – A Saturday afternoon fire caused $80,000 in property damage to a detached, four-car garage on Terra Cotta Road, leaving the roof partially collapsed, a Crystal Lake Fire Rescue news release states.
The department responded at 1:09 p.m. to a report of smoke and flames billowing from the rear of the garage near a home at 4009 Terra Cotta Road. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the garage's roof had already partially collapsed.
Crews fought the fire defensively to prevent the entire roof from falling onto the ground and setting off ammunition that was reportedly being stored inside the garage. Crews secured the fire at 1:57 p.m., but the items inside the garage were destroyed from significant heat, smoke and water damage, the news release states.
The department received mutual aid from 11 neighboring departments. No one was injured in the incident. Officials, including the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, are investigating the fire.
