Chicago continues grid garbage collection roll out
CHICAGO — Chicago is continuing to roll out its new grid garbage collection program with about 72,000 homes on the city's Northwest Side.
The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation says the next phase will start on Monday. The program started with about 55,000 homes on the North Side last month.
The new system aims to be more efficient, make crews more productive and save taxpayers money in operation costs. Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Thomas Byrne says residents may have their garbage picked up on a different day but service will still be weekly. Last week crews posted "Change in Garbage Service Day" notifications in affected areas.
