Senior exemptions

To the Editor:

Property assessments for senior homeowners living in McHenry Township are out of control. Most of us put no children into the public school districts, yet the “senior exemption” is a pittance in the reality of our tax bill.

Those of us who still own our homes are taxed at the same rate as someone with several children in public schools and earning a lot more than our retirement income. It is time to adjust the senior exemption and maybe make a tax category for all the investment people who own rental properties where dozens of children are enrolled in the public school system as opposed to individual property owners.
