Cubs consider calls to minors
CHICAGO – All eyes have turned to the Cubs’ minor league system in anticipation of prospect call-ups now that the trade deadline passed.
Triple-A Iowa outfielder Brett Jackson and third baseman Josh Vitters have drawn the most attention, and with today’s off day Cubs executives plan to discuss their options. However, both players would need regular playing time if promoted to the big leagues.
Both have areas in their respective game that need improvement. Jackson is still striking out at an obscene rate. In 102 games he has struck out in 152 of his 391 at-bats – nearly 39 percent of his at-bats. Hitting hasn’t been an issue for Vitters, who is batting .296 with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs. Vitters’ defense, however, is not up to par, with 20 errors in 91 games this season.
