Cubs trade Dempster to Texas for minor leaguers

CHICAGO – In an empty room inside the Cubs’ front office building, Ryan Dempster could only sit and wait.

As the clock ticked ever closer to Tuesday’s 3 p.m. nonwaivers trade deadline, the Cubs were in a race to unload their coveted starting pitcher. And with five minutes to spare, the Cubs found a match.

The Cubs traded Dempster to the Texas Rangers for two minor leaguers, third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks.
