Connie Ellett didn’t change her mindset after the first round of the Illinois Women’s Golf Association Junior Girls Golf Championship.
Tied for fourth place and trailing by three strokes, Ellett rallied Wednesday to shoot a 2-under-par 74 in the final round for a 1-under 151 total, winning the two-day tournament by one stroke over Heather Ciskowski.
Ellett said the victory was one of the biggest highlights of her junior golf career.
“I always go in with the mentality that I’m going to win,” said Ellett, who recently graduated from Hampshire. “I just focused on my game and everything fell into place.”
The longer layout at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy gave an advantage to the longer hitters, but Ellett consistently hit fairways in the second round and put herself in position to make birdies.
“I hit the ball great,” Ellett said. “I just didn’t putt very well, but they fell when they mattered and that’s all the counts.”
As a senior last fall, Ellett took second place in the IHSA Class AA state golf tournament. She will continue her golfing career at Northern Illinois this fall as a freshman.
“This was one of my favorite junior events, so it was nice to win that one,” Ellett said. “I’m really excited to start college season. It’s something new, and it will definitely challenge my game.”
