Diabetes and the military

To the Editor:

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes in September 2011. Everyone was telling her that she can live a healthy normal life with diabetes. She was told that she can do and be whatever she wants to and nothing will stop her.

When she was thinking about the things she would like to do, she mentioned the military. But this is the one thing she can’t do. Why can’t we change this for all diabetics who have a dream to be in the military without lying and hiding a manageable disease. There are many people who hide the fact that they have diabetes who are in the military.
