RICHMOND – A 68-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle accident that closed Route 12 for some six hours Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Sharon L. Ams of Arlington Heights was driving a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Route 12, less than half-a-mile east of Mackwood Drive, when she crossed the center line and sideswiped a 2002 GMC pickup truck. The Jeep collided with a recreational trailer the pickup was towing and caught fire. Richmond Fire Protection District personnel extinguished the blaze.

Ams was pronounced dead at the scene. She and both people in the pickup were wearing seat belts, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the accident.
