Crystal Lake teens charged with arson

WOODSTOCK – Two Crystal Lake 17-year-olds were charged with arson after being linked to several barn fires in rural McHenry County, authorities said.

Joseph Gerdes, 868 Coventry, and Andrew Wiegand, 1472 Bridgedale Road, both were charged with arson and criminal damage to property, both felonies. The teens also were charged with criminal trespassing to property, a Class A misdemeanor.

The boys were responsible for five fires in rural McHenry County spanning more than 60 days that caused an estimated $1 million in damage, the Sheriff's Department said.

The teens also were tied to several criminal acts in Crystal Lake, but have not been charged with those crimes, the Crystal Lake Police Department said, but additional charges may be forthcoming.
