D-300 now projects budget with surplus

ALGONQUIN – District 300’s tentative budget for 2013 has a $1.07 million surplus, but the district’s new financial chief cautioned Monday that the number is likely to change because of teacher contract negotiations.

Susan Harkin presented to board members her first budget proposal since becoming the district’s chief financial officer in July.

Unlike earlier versions that projected a $1.25 million deficit, Harkin projected less of an increase in salaries – a 1 percent raise – because the district and teachers union have not reached an agreement. A third-party mediator was requested this month in the negotiations.
