Former Sugar Grove police chief is new coroner

GENEVA – Former Sugar Grove Police Chief Brad Sauer on Tuesday became Kane County’s interim coroner.

He will complete the unexpired term of indicted former Kane County Coroner Charles West, who died July 4. Republican Rob Russell, a DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputy, and Democrat Tao Martinez of North Aurora will vie for the position in the Nov. 6 general election.

Kane County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay appointed Sauer with the board’s consent. The only discussion stemmed from Bonnie Kunkel, D-Aurora, who asked about his pay and pension. McConnaughay said compensation for the position would not change, and Sauer’s few months as coroner shouldn’t affect his pension.
