Cubs, Volstad fall again
CHICAGO – Twenty-three starts and counting for Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad.
Wins have eluded Volstad, who is winless in 23 consecutive outings dating to July 17, 2011. Volstad had a chance to end his stretch of futility Tuesday against the Houston Astros, the same team he beat for his last win in more than a year. However, Volstad lasted only five innings and the Cubs’ bats were silenced in a 10-1 loss to Houston.
“He got to five [innings] and there was nothing real crisp going on, even the balls that were hit were hit hard,” manager Dale Sveum said. “The command, getting the ball up, the off-speed stuff that’s what was getting hit hard. He didn’t have command of his fastball or quite the sink he had the past couple outings.
