Illinois installs nest platforms for endangered birds
SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Illinois officials are trying to attract an endangered bird by building nesting platforms at a state park.
The Department of Natural Resources and the Rural Electric Convenience Cooperative installed two elevated platforms for nesting ospreys at Sangchris Lake State Park southeast of Rochester on Friday.
Ospreys are a bird of prey whose population has rebounded since the pesticide DDT was banned in the 1970s. They nest in large trees and rock formations near rivers and streams.
