Back roads, hidden treasures discovered on weekend away
The heat was oppressive in early August, and I was ready for a get-away. Green Lake, Wis., was my idea, our 43rd wedding anniversary seemed like the perfect excuse. My husband and I had not been there in a couple of decades, but we had fond memories.
Of course, we had to go to the Internet to check out distance and time: 163 miles; 3 hours and 5 minutes. For us, getting there is half the fun, so off we went, ignoring the GPS, which would have been “recalculating” had it been on.
There really was no hurry, so we stopped at the On the Square Antique Mall in Walworth, Wis., to stretch our legs and look around. Outside Walworth, we got creative and struck out on a Route 67 for points north. At Elk Horn, Wis., I was reminded of two of my husband’s most endearing qualities. He is blessed with both a sweet tooth and the memory of an elephant. Before I knew it, we were at Lakeland Bakery.
