State holds off on roundabout in Coral Township
UNION – The state transportation department has put the brakes on the proposed $3.7 million roundabout project at Route 20 and Harmony Road in Coral Township, after more than 300 residents expressed issues with the circular intersection.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Guy Tridgell said the agency will explore the feasibility and costs of creating a traditional traffic stop at the intersection and compare it with building a roundabout, a trendy circular intersection that proponents argue is a
safer alternative to typical intersections.
In late August, residents throughout Coral Township expressed concerns about safety and navigation with the roundabout during a public hearing on the project.
