Lincoln Park Zoo names baby zebra Kito

CHICAGO – The public can now see the baby zebra born last week at Lincoln Park Zoo.

The baby zebra also has a new name to go with his new home. More than 2,400 votes were cast to name the male zebra "Kito," which is a Swahili word meaning jewel. The baby's new home is the public yard of the zoo's antelope and zebra area after spending a week bonding with his mother in a private enclosure.

Kito was born Aug. 23, the second baby for 5-year-old mother Adia and 6-year-old father Clayton. The zebras are part of the Grevy's Zebra Species Survival Plan, which manages the zoo population of the endangered African animal.
