CHICAGO – The Cubs again took advantage of the expanded rosters, recalling right-handed pitcher Miguel Socolovich from Triple-A Iowa.
Socolovich, 23, was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 23. In 31 relief appearances this season at Triple-A Norfolk and Iowa, Socolovich went 2-0 with four saves and a 2.11 ERA. In three different stints with Baltimore, Socolovich posted no record and a 6.97 ERA in six outings. He is available in the bullpen today versus the San Francisco Giants.
Travis Wood (4-11, 4.71 ERA) starts for the Cubs in today's series finale against the Giants. Wood is 0-3 with a 5.68 ERA in his last three starts.
The Cubs won't have it easy in their attempt to take the series with a win today. Right-hander Matt Cain (13-5, 2.82) pitches for the Giants. Cain is 4-0 with a 0.79 ERA in his last eight starts versus the Cubs. He has thrown 20 consecutive scoreless innings at Wrigley Field.
Alfonso Soriano is one home run shy of his 25th home run of the season, which would mark the fourth time in his Cubs career to hit at least 25 homers in a season (2007, 2008, 2011). Soriano would become only the 10th player in franchise history with at least four seasons with 25-plus home runs.
