White Sox add another arm, recall Axelrod

CHICAGO – The White Sox have added another arm to the bullpen after recalling right-hander Dylan Axelrod from Double-A Birmingham.

In 11 appearances (seven starts) with the Sox, Axelrod is 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA. For now, Axelrod heads to the bullpen as a long reliever though a spot start in the next week isn't out of the question.

Axelrod could help starters Chris Sale and Jose Quintana, who starts tonight, get additional rest during this final month of the regular season.

Quintana (5-3, 3.17 ERA) has pitched well in his seven starts at home. He is 2-2 with a 2.68 ERA and five quality starts. Left-hander Scott Diamond (10-6, 3.21) starts for the Sox.

Manager Robin Ventura sits catcher A.J. Pierzynski tonight in favor of Tyler Flowers. Pierzynski is hitting .176 in his last 15 games. Since Aug. 13 (18 games), Pierzynski has hit only one home run and driven in four runs.

The Sox have won eight straight games at home.
