McHenry library offers programs for students

McHENRY – The McHenry Public Library has scheduled three free programs for students ages 12 to 18, but registration is required.

• Math 4 Every 1: Fractions, Pre-Algebra and Algebra: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. For ages 12 to 15 years. Anyone who has basic skills and confidence can solve math problems.

Attendees will learn how to approach a problem and solve it. The program will focus on common mistakes. It is presented by McHenry Kumon Math and Reading Center.

• College Application Essay Workshop: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18. For grades 9 to 12. This workshop is designed to show students and parents what college admissions
officers want to see in an essay.

The workshop will examine the types of topics students will encounter, cover the four steps to writing a winning essay and more. It is presented by Kaplan Test Prep.

• ACT Practice Test: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 27. For grades 9 to 12. A fully proctored practice ACT test will show students what to expect on test day.

Students must bring No. 2 pencils and an approved calculator.

They will receive their test scores at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and learn time-saving strategies. Parents are encouraged to attend the Nov. 13 session. The program is presented by Kaplan Test Prep.
