McHenry County 4-H Ambassadors is the name for active members who promote 4-H and the opportunities it offers young people. Ambassadors receive communication training, assist with county 4-H events and complete a leadership project.
The program has two levels: Star for ages 12 to 15, and Grand for ages 16 and older. This year’s McHenry County Star Ambassadors are Catherine (Paige) Behrens, Cheyenne Bihlmaier, Kayla Burck, McKenzie Dice, Ashley Emmert, Timothy Emmert, Daniel Frank, Sean Frank, Collin Franz, Jim Kanter, Kristen Ksepka, Margaret Ling, Reese Sadowski, Nicole Scichowski, Brianna Sheehan, Sarah Siddons and Tyler Szyldo. Grand Ambassadors are Anna Gallagher, Lois Kanter, Rachel Siddons, Sarah Sheehan and Kurt Woolridge.
Northeast Cattlemen’s Association sponsors a scholarship for a youth in the ambassador program. The recipient this year is Anna Gallagher, daughter of Judy and Bob Gallagher of Union. She attends McHenry County College and will attend the National 4-H Club Congress this fall.

A major contribution has been made to the McHenry County Farm Bureau Foundation. Dan Volkers, farm bureau manager, said the donation from Jim and Cheryl Wormley of Woodstock will benefit the Ag in the Classroom and the Teacher Summer Ag Institute programs.

Marian Central Catholic High School announced the inaugural class of Hurricane Award recipients at the season’s first football game Aug. 24. This new award is designed to recognize adult supporters who have distinguished themselves through dedicated long-term involvement in furthering the programs and mission of Marian Central.
Recipients were George Frisch, Johnsburg; Janet and John Smith, McHenry; and Monsignor Michael Tierney, recently retired pastor of St. Margaret Mary Parish, Algonquin. Frisch has helped with the bingo program since 1984, served on the board of administration since 1992 and is on the executive committee.
The Smiths have served on numerous committees, including the 2008 capital campaign, which financed the 2010 building addition. Tierney taught and was spiritual director at Marian in the 1970s. He assisted with and directed numerous theater productions. As a pastor, he served on the council of administration and the executive committee.
Mary Ann Martinez, director of development, said the start of the new school year has proceeded smoothly with 690 students, four fewer than at the start of 2011-12.

After two months of renovations, the Woodstock VFW kitchen reopened Friday with a “spruced-up kitchen.” New kitchen managers are Mark and Sarah Adolphus, former Elks Lodge managers.
