Cary resident Andrew Conneen, who is a government teacher at Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, has been named a finalist for Illinois Teacher of the Year, the state Board of Education said in a news release.
Conneen is one of nine teachers to be named a finalist. He was one of the more than 200 teachers nominated in the state.
The 2012-13 Illinois Teacher of the Year will be announced during the "Those Who Excel" banquet on Oct. 20 in Bloomington-Normal. The winner will represent the state at NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., and in the council of Chief State School Officers' National Teacher of the Year Program.
Conneen has been a teacher for 18 years; the last 14 years at Stevenson, according to a news release from the school. He is a graduate from the University of Illinois.
Conneen teaches Advanced Placement Government and Advanced Placement Comparative Government, and has served as a team leader on the school's government curriculum team.
During his time at Stevenson, Conneen has led voter registration drives, coordinated recruitment and training of more than 600 student election judges, helped coordinate visits from elected officials and candidates, overseen student-moderated debates for federal and local candidates, and taken students to observe the Iowa caucuses.
