Fall music guide
13 albums about to hit stores, digital outlets
You might want to find some extra cash this fall because several big-name acts are coming out with new albums.
And Green Day has upped the ante, promising three new releases in the coming months. Plus the holiday albums are coming early this year with a couple due out in mid-October.
Here is a look at some of the notable releases set to come out this fall.
Artist: Green Day
Album: “¡Uno!”
Release date: Sept. 25
What we know: “¡Uno!” will be the first release in a trilogy of Green Day albums. “¡Dos!” comes out Nov. 13 and “¡Tré!” is due Jan. 15. A box set featuring all three albums (each delivered on their release date), a DVD, Green Day merchandise and more is already available to pre-order on the band’s website. “¡Uno!” also marks the band’s departure from its rock opera formats featured on “American Idiot” and loosely used on “21st Century Breakdown.”
Artist: Mumford & Sons
Album: “Babel”
Release date: Sept. 25
What we know: This is the follow-up to the Mumford & Sons’ 2009 album. They’ve been playing some of the new songs live in recent months. “Babel” will have international release dates Sept. 21 and 24 before it’s out in the U.S. and Canada Sept. 25.
Artist: No Doubt
Album: “Push and Shove”
Release date: Sept. 25
What we know: This will be No Doubt’s first studio album of new material since 2001. Both singles released so far, “Settle Down” and “Push and Shove,” maintain the band’s sound from past releases while making small improvements to seem more 2012. “Settle Down” is a pop song that features a reggae vibe. The title track is along the same lines, but with more of an updated, dance club feel.
Artist: Muse
Album: “The 2nd Law”
Release date: Oct. 2
What we know: Band members have promised in interviews “The 2nd Law” will be much “different” than past albums. Included on the album will be “Survival,” which was dubbed the official song of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The song combines Muse’s grandiose rock sound with operatic vocals. Also on the album will be “Madness.” That song dials down the band’s bombastic rock approach in favor of stirring computerized beats.
Artist: Blake Shelton
Album: “Cheers, It’s Christmas”
Release date: Oct. 2
What we know: The first of the season’s holiday albums arrives early. Shelton will be backed by a full orchestra. He also will have a little help from Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire and his mother, Dorothy Shackleford. Bublé appears to sing his own song, “Home,” with Shelton, who once covered the song himself. The two have worked the number into a holiday song.
Artist: Cee Lo Green
Album: “Cee Lo Green’s Magic Moment”
Release date: Oct. 16
What we know: Another member of the cast of “The Voice,” another Christmas album. According to the Associated Press, Green is promising a “soulful take” on several classic Christmas songs including “Silent Night,” “White Christmas” and “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch.” Guest artists include Rod Stewart, rapper B.o.B. and a capella group Straight No Chaser.
Artist: Gary Clark Jr.
Album: “Blak and Blu”
Release date: Oct. 23
What we know: “Blak and Blu,” guitar wizard Gary Clark Jr.’s full-length debut, will contain almost all of the songs from his 2010 EP. Also featured will be a track that is part a cover of Little Johnny Taylor’s “If You Love Me Like You Say” (popularized by Albert Collins) and part “Third Stone From The Sun” by Jimi Hendrix. According to a press release from Clark’s record label, this will be a “complete reworking of the song utilizing the Hendrix riff reinterpreted by Clark.”
Artist: Kendrick Lamar
Album: “good kid, m.A.A.d city”
Release date: Oct. 23
What we know: Lamar already has worked with Drake, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and a whole host of recognizable names. Now, the rapper finally gets his major label debut, partly produced by Dr. Dre. The album will include the groggy hit “Swimming Pools (Drank), “The Recipe” featuring Dr. Dre and a collaboration with Lady Gaga called “Partynauseous.”
Artist: Taylor Swift
Album: “Red”
Release date: Oct. 23
What we know: Swift spent two years working on “Red,” her fourth studio album. According to the 22-year-old singer’s website, she named the album “Red” “because of the tumultuous, crazy adventures in love and loss that it chronicles.” So expect more songs about breaking up with boys. This includes the album’s first single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
Artist: Aerosmith
Album: “Music From Another Dimension!”
Release date: Nov. 6
What we know: Steven Tyler is no longer an “American Idol” judge, giving him time to concentrate on Aerosmith. “Music From Another Dimension!” will be the band’s first studio album of all-new material in 11 years. Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry are among those with producing credits on this project.
Artist: Green Day
Album: “¡Dos!”
Release date: Nov. 13
What we know: See above
Artist: One Direction
Album: “Take Me Home”
Release date: Nov. 13
What we know: One Direction is striking quickly with its second album after hitting it big in the U.S. this year. The British boy band also wasted no time setting a steady schedule of live dates for next summer, some with tickets on sale almost a year in advance. So a new album does make some sense. The band has been taking track name suggestions from fans through its Twitter account. The first single will be “Live While We’re Young.”
Artist: Soundgarden
Album: “King Animal”
Release date: Nov. 13
What we know: “King Animal” will be Soundgarden’s first studio album since 1996’s “Down On The Upside.” A short video containing part of the searing new song “Worse Dreams” can be found on the band’s website. The track is on a short list confirmed for the album. Not confirmed is “Live To Rise,” featured as part of this summer’s “Avengers” soundtrack.
