McHenry soccer rallies late, stays unbeaten

McHENRY – Jose Albarran delivered a wake-up call for the McHenry boys soccer team Tuesday.

With his team locked in a scoreless tie, the Woodstock North senior forward broke open the scoring with 20 minutes left, and suddenly McHenry’s unblemished record was on the line. But the Warriors hunkered down, scored two goals and won, 2-1.

“After [Woodstock North] scored we found some energy and some urgency, and we played some McHenry-style soccer and ratcheted up the pressure,” McHenry coach Tony Caruso said. “Give Woodstock North credit. They played a heck of a game.”

Tony Quintero scored off an assist from Luis Beltran to tie the score after Albarran’s goal, and Luke Nelson hit Marco Tello on a cross with 11:30 to play that sealed the Fox Valley Conference crossover win.

Ricky Rodriguez made nine saves for the Thunder (4-5), and Frankie Valle made seven for McHenry (6-0).

Dundee-Crown 5, Hampshire 0: At Carpentersville, Eduardo Arellano had a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Castillo had a pair of assists to earn the FVC crossover victory for D-C. Malik Washington, Paul Buch, Jose Angeles and Alex Ramirez also scored for the Chargers (9-1). Andy Pederson made five saves for Hampshire (3-4-1).

Johnsburg 6, CL South 1: At Crystal Lake, Alex Jansen scored three goals for the Skyhawks in an FVC crossover win. Michael Conley scored for South.

Grayslake North 3, Prairie Ridge 1: At Crystal Lake, Nick Woodbury scored a first-half goal for the Wolves (4-3), but the Knights (3-8) poured in three second-half goals to earn the FVC crossover win.

Jacobs 3, Woodstock 0: At Algonquin, Chris Rigby, Anthony Moscatello and Kenny Finn scored for the Golden Eagles in an FVC crossover win. Baris Erdogan made 14 saves for the Blue Streaks (5-6).

Marengo 8, North Boone 2: At Marengo, Nick VanVoorhees and David Giera each scored twice for the Indians (2-8 overall, 1-2 Big Northern Conference East Division) who picked up their first win the BNC East.

CROSS COUNTRY

Burlington Central Quadrangular: At Burlington, Aaron Spivey (16:26.7) and James Kaht (16:35.4) finished 1-2 en route to Richmond-Burton’s first-place team finish in the 2.99-mile race.

Freshman Seth Conroy (16:50.7) finished fourth overall for Huntley (48 points, second), and Ross Seaton (17:00.2) took sixth overall for Hampshire (154, fourth).

GOLF

CL South 166, Hampshire 190: At Crystal Lake Country Club, Grant Gassensmith’s 5-over-par 40 was the low round, and Brandon Jarva shot a 41 to lead the Gators (2-3) in the FVC crossover win. Drew Doran (46) led the Whip-Purs.

Richmond-Burton 161, Rockford Lutheran 175: At Nippersink in Genoa City, Wis., Joey Pegura shot 3-over 38 on the back nine to lead the Rockets past the Crusaders in their BNC East dual meet.

Bobby Meyers (40), Joe Sikura (41) and Jordan Hahn (42) rounded out the scoring for R-B (8-2, 4-1).

Johnsburg 168, Westminster Christian 172: At Chapel Hill in McHenry, Alec Brown shot an 5-over 40 for the Skyhawks in a nonconference win.

Marengo 182, Belvidere 183: At Timber Pointe in Poplar Grove, after a double bogey on the first hole, Ryan Wick parred the next four and finished with a 4-over 40 for the Indians in a nonconference win.

Jacobs 153, Cary-Grove 167: At Randall Oaks in West Dundee, Chris Boyle, Jack Ramsett and Cam Bodie all shot 2-over 38s for the Golden Eagles in an FVC Valley Division win. Peter Kalamaras shot a 41 for the Trojans.
