Patriot Day, Oktoberfest and more geared to seniors in McHenry Township

JOHNSBURG – McHenry Township and Senior Services Associates are teaming up to offer events for area seniors.

At 10:15 a.m. Friday, Andy Balafas of Vitas Innovative Hospice Care will present “The Heart of a Veteran” in honor of Patriot Day at the McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Road.

Members of the community are invited to attend this ceremony honoring all veterans, with a special remembrance of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11. Refreshments will be served.

At 11:30 a.m. Sept. 28, McHenry Township invites seniors to celebrate autumn at the annual Oktoberfest event.

The festivities begin with a lunch of Bavarian-style roast pork, brats, warm German potato salad and red cabbage.

Jerry May and the Happy Wanderers will perform traditional German folk music.

Tickets cost $15, which includes lunch, drinks and entertainment. Registration and payment are due by Sept. 20.

McHenry Township also offers low-cost computer classes to area seniors at the McHenry Township Senior Center.

A variety of classes, from beginner to photo editing, are offered.

Volunteer instructors are needed. Weekly classes are held, and each instructional session includes two to three classes.

To volunteer or for information on any of these programs, call activities director Cindi Stoffel at 815-344-3555.
