Harvard day care shuttered following sex charges

HARVARD – A 63-year-old Harvard man stands accused of inappropriately touching a young girl at the day care business he ran out of his home, according to the Harvard Police Department.

Wendell D. Yancey, of the 500 block of West Washington Street, will appear in court next month after being charged with felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a person under the age of 13.

Authorities received a complaint in late June that Yancey had touched the girl in a sexual manner at his in-home day care center near Washington Elementary School, Police Chief Dan Kazy-Garey said.

An investigation ensued with assistance from the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services, and an arrest warrant was issued.

Members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office arrested Yancey on July 15.

The day care business has since been closed.

Kazy-Garey said he could not comment further on the incident because it is an open investigation.
