Oversight sought in Colo. theater shooting payouts

Family members of some of those killed or wounded in the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater want lawmakers to put a victims’ fund under the control of an independent arbitrator.

Tom Teves and other families called on Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and others for help Thursday. The news conference was markedly less emotional than one last month, when the family members demanded a say about how to spend $5 million raised in the wake of the July 20 massacre.

Crystal Lake native John Larimer, 27, was one of 12 people killed in the movie theater during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Larimer died protecting his girlfriend, Juleah Vojtsek of Algonquin. He was a Navy cryptologic technician stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora.
