Groundbreaking Thursday for low-income housing

WOODSTOCK – Home of the Sparrow will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. Thursday at 140 North St. in Woodstock to celebrate the start of construction for six townhouses and the renovation of two houses with five units.

Through a collaborative agreement with the Housing Opportunity Development Corp., Home of the Sparrow will assume ownership of these 11 units of permanent, supportive housing. The Housing Opportunity Development Corp. will be responsible for acquiring and developing the units.

The properties will offer affordable homes for 35 to 45 low-income individuals in McHenry County.

Home of the Sparrow will provide support services so homeless women and their children have access to what they need to be self-sufficient and live stable, productive lives.

The construction and renovation of these houses is made available through funding from the Illinois Housing Development Authority. The properties once belonged to Corporation for Affordable Homes of McHenry County.

Home of the Sparrow operates two transitional shelters and nine apartments in various locations along with four Sparrow’s Nest Thrift Stores in McHenry, Woodstock, Cary and Palatine.

A fifth Sparrow’s Nest Thrift Store will open this fall at 781 S. Randall Road, Algonquin.
