Athlete of the Week

Chris Streveler

Marian Central, Senior

The Hurricanes quarterback rushed 12 times for 102 yards and completed 14 of 24 passes for 307 yards to lead his team past Marmion, 34-7, in their Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division game Friday.

Streveler, who committed to Minnesota over the summer, rushed for two touchdowns and hit Greg Walczak for touchdowns of 80 and 44 yards.

Marian is ranked No. 4 in The Associated Press Class 5A poll and is 4-0.

Airing it out: Woodstock North coach Jeff Schroeder mentioned last week before playing Crystal Lake Central that the Thunder needed to become more two-dimensional on offense. Quarterback Brian Loftin had his best passing game with 168 yards, although the Thunder lost to Central, 21-14.

“We’ve really worked on our pass-blocking drills,” said Loftin, who completed his first eight passing attempts. “We need, sometimes, to open it up more.”

Loftin completed 9 of 13 passes and his one interception came on the final play as he was trying to throw deep and tie the score. North runs the Wing-T most of the time with some option, but now opponents have something else to consider.

“We’re a running team, but we take what you give us,” Schroeder said. “Brian’s very good at throwing. We can make you respect us that way.”

Lalor record: Alden-Hebron quarterback Bryce Lalor became the school’s career passing yardage leader in Saturday’s 45-8 victory over Chicago Longwood.

Big games: A couple other quarterbacks who had big games were McHenry’s Kyle Snedeker and Huntley’s Kameron Sallee.

Snedeker completed 17 of 23 passes for 296 and a pair of touchdowns to Korey Partenheimer as the Warriors lost to Jacobs, 49-42, in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division shootout.

Sallee hit on 10 of 15 passes for 163 and three touchdowns as the Red Raiders defeated Crystal Lake South, 20-19. Sallee connected with wide receiver Bryce Beschorner for a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the game-winner.

More big games: Jacobs running back Steve Varela carried 33 times for 172 yards and four touchdowns in the Golden Eagles wild victory over McHenry.

Marengo’s John Lesiak carried 32 times for 208 yards and a touchdown in the Indians’ 35-17 loss to Richmond-Burton. R-B’s Chris Vlasak rushed 15 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns in that game.

Dundee-Crown’s Cody Lane, the area’s rushing leader, carried 26 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns, while teammate J.T. Beasley had 10 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown as the Chargers defeated Prairie Ridge, 35-21.

This Week’s Top Games

Dundee-Crown vs. Huntley

7:15 p.m. Friday, Harmony Road Campus Stadium

At the start of the season, this didn’t look like one of the top games, but D-C (3-1 overall, 1-1 FVC Valley) and Huntley (2-2, 2-0) have established themselves as potential playoff teams. A win Friday will be a big step in that direction.

Jacobs vs. Cary-Grove

7:15 p.m. Friday, Al Bohrer FIeld

Cary-Grove (4-0, 2-0 FVC Valley) is No. 7 in Class 7A and looks like the favorite in the division. Jacobs (3-1, 1-0) has looked good, but needs to tighten its defense after allowing 98 points in its past two games.

Marengo vs. Harvard

7 p.m. Friday, Dan Horne FIeld

Marengo (1-3, 0-2 BNC East) and Harvard (1-3, 0-1) renew McHenry County’s oldest rivalry, which has its 92nd meeting in 90 years Friday. Harvard leads the series, 61-27-4.
