Defeat referendum

To the Editor:

I believe the referendum question to create the office of county executive is a singularly bad idea. In an era when almost all of us agree that shrinking government is a laudable goal, we are presented with a question this November of creating another layer of government.

What is the point? Is our present form of county governance not working? Is it running deficits? Are our elected county representatives acting unreasonably or unaccountable to the electorate? I think not.

I have had a number of firsthand experiences with the county’s elected officials. I have found them approachable, polite, responsive and thoughtful. They have manifested an overriding concern for the public interest.

Can anyone seriously maintain that Will County, the only county in our region that has adopted this form of government, is an icon for efficient and responsible government?

It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican, Democrat or independent, we can all agree that this is a bad idea. In fact, in one of the few instances of nonpartisanship in Springfield, legislators from both parties this past term overwhelmingly joined together to defeat legislation that would have changed McHenry County’s system of government. I say we defeat it too.
