Ill. launches campaign for child auto safety

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois officials are promoting National Child Passenger Safety Week in Illinois.

It calls attention to the need to properly secure children in appropriate car or booster seats or standard safety belts.

The campaign culminates Saturday when experts will provide hands-on inspections of child safety seats at 80 events across the state.

This year's theme is "Cookies, Cuddles and Car Seats." It's aimed at grandparents and stressing the important role they play in keeping kids in cars safe.

Officials say motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children through age 12. Proper restraint could reduce chances of fatality by 54 percent in toddlers.

The Illinois Department of Transportation, Secretary of State Jesse White and the AAA motor club are working together on the project.
