Athletes of the Week
Prairie Ridge, sr.
Cowlin won Flight 1 at the Woodstock Ryan Byrne Festival on Saturday in 15:54 over the 3.1-mile course at Emricson Park.
Cowlin and McHenry sophomore Jesse Reiser battled it out in the top division of the flighted race, where runners compete against the comparable runners from other schools. All flights count the same toward the team title.
Cowlin was second in the McHenry County Meet to start the season and was a Northwest Herald All-Area first-team selection last year.
Adams won Kaneland’s Eddington Invitational in 17:53 on Saturday, helping the Indians to second place as a team.
Adams defeated Crystal Lake Central’s Sami Staples by 12 seconds.
Adams was seventh in the Class 2A state meet last year and could be poised to contend for the title this season. She won the Class 2A 1,600 meters in track last spring.
Current leaders: There is one round of Fox Valley Conference dual meets remaining to complete that season, most of which will take place Oct. 2.
The current boys leaders are Crystal Lake Central, which is 5-0 in the Fox Division, and Jacobs, which is 4-0 in the Valley Division.
Central’s girls also are leading the Fox with a 5-0 mark. Cary-Grove’s girls are 4-0 and hold a slight edge over Prairie Ridge (4-1) and Jacobs (3-1).
The FVC Invitational Meet that starts the postseason will crown overall boys and girls champions, which will receive traveling trophies.
Special treat: Runners at the FVC dual meets hosted by Jacobs on Tuesday at Sunset Park got a bonus when they finished the race.
2007 Jacobs graduate Evan Jager, the sixth-place finisher in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics, handed out their finishing cards.
Jager returned to the Algonquin area for a couple of weeks to visit family and friends.
He was honored Sept. 5 with a ceremony at the high school where he signed autographs and took pictures with fans.
Beattie’s record falls: Lake Park’s Kaylee Flanagan broke the Detweiller Park course record held by Woodstock’s Kayla Beattie set in 2010.
Beattie won the Class 2A race at the IHSA Cross Country State Meet in 16:21; Flanagan ran 16:20.30 at Peoria Notre Dame’s Richard Spring Invitational on Saturday.
Flanagan took third last year in the Class 3A state meet.
