End of strike means Chicago athletes play again

CHICAGO — The end of the Chicago teachers strike means students are back on athletic fields.

Chicago Public Schools said Friday that interscholastic prep sports programs have resumed after the strike ended Tuesday and teachers returned to class on Wednesday. School officials say they've been able to reschedule many games and matches. About 11,000 students play fall sports. They are still eligible for state tournament competition.

IHSA rules ban athletic activity during teacher strikes. Chicago school officials asked the IHSA for a waiver last week, but the IHSA denied the request.
