Teen charged with making a false report

CRYSTAL LAKE – A 17-year-old girl is facing misdemeanor charges in connection with telling the sheriff’s office she was kidnapped when in reality she was with her friends for two days.

On Sunday, a family who lives in an unincorporated area near Crystal Lake reported their daughter had run away.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Lt. James Popovits said the girl is a habitual runaway. In the past, she had been found with friends and would return home.

On Tuesday, the teenager returned home. The girl told a sheriff’s office investigator that she had been abducted by an unknown male and female, who drove her to an unknown location and held her against her will, according to a news release.

The teenager also told the investigator she had lost consciousness because of a blow to the head.

After an examination at a hospital, “her statements were not corroborated by any injuries,” Popovits said.

Popovits said the teenager had no physical injuries to indicate that she was abducted or physically attacked, and the story was fabricated. The girl was charged with disorderly conduct and false report of an offense.

The name of the girl was not released because she was charged as a juvenile.

Popovits would not comment on whether the girl has had previous charges filed against her.
